One of my early teachers, Scott Wells, told me, “Since you gain weight as you age, you need to get as lean as you can each year. That’s the key to maintaining a healthy weight.” Scott was a bodybuilder, so we differed in our approaches to fitness, but he was right about one thing: you need to push hard on what matters most to you at least once per year.
For us- It’s not body fat (although it does matter). The supreme metric is fitness.
Fitness is defined as: How hard can you work for short vs. long efforts using various human skills?
That’s it, the definition to rule them all. It’s not about strength or cardio. Those are just pieces. Fitness is your capacity to apply your strengths and abilities to the challenges you will encounter throughout life.
People who build a broad, robust level of fitness lead healthier lives, experience less disease and have deeper social connections. They extend their freedom and live independently for longer. Fitness truly is the fountain of youth and the secret to a great time spent in the golden years.
We make a yearly push to find our fitness every year in late February. It’s called The Open. It’s the most spirited and connected time of the year and is right around the corner for WLRCF. We even have plans to make it extra fun at our gym.
I’ll tell you more as we get closer. For now, check your calendars and mark off the Fridays from February 27 to March 17 if possible; you won’t want to miss this.
