How to Change Mom’s Mind

Most freelance trainers try to answer the question, “How do I get another client?”

There are better questions to answer.

A question like, “What would it take to change mom’s mind?”

My mom was in her 60s when she started coming to my gym and lost nearly 100lbs.

But it took a lot more than walking in.

Mom had a son who constantly talked about saving the world, 100 or so clients at a time.
Mom saw other people like her already coming to my gym and succeeding.
When we talked about starting, I didn’t tell her what she needed to do; I asked, “What could we as professionals do for her?”

When the day came that Mom finally stepped into the gym, she didn’t work with me. She needed a coach with a skill set I had to admit was out of my scope. Her coach did a fantastic job of making fitness accessible for her. When she wanted help with nutrition, another coach at my gym did the same.

I never got to work with her, lol.

Well, I see her now in my Monday group sessions. I suspect she could come to other sessions, but her son doesn’t coach those.

Mom saw us do something that hardcore gyms don’t.
We listened.

And listening is hard to do when your internal voice is always yapping about “how do I get another client?”

Even if you don’t have a client, it’s still the wrong question to ask.

The one question that will bring you more clients than you can handle is,

“How can I do more to serve others than anyone else can?”

It can take a long time to answer that question. That’s why people avoid trying to answer it. I’ve been there.

But it’s better to spend more time answering the right question than quickly answering a lot of the wrong ones.

Because one day, you may end up serving someone precious to you, like your mom, or someone else’s mom.
