Do You “Bright Spot Friday”?

Every Friday, members of WLRCF post a “BSF” in our Facebook Group.

BSF stands for “Bright Spot Friday”. A bright spot can be anything. You PR’d your 1k row time or beat a tough workout before the time was up. You can brag on someone else at the gym you saw doing hard work. I just watched Sidney Bold pull a heavy sled up our hill without stopping once. That’s tough to do because I was stopping on my sled pull! So, I’m gonna brag on her in my BSF.

It can be something that went well and had absolutely nothing to do with the gym. Cindy just retired from teaching. Now we all get to celebrate with her.

The point of our gym having a Bright Spot Friday tradition isn’t just because people like to see good things happening to their friends. It’s science!

Behavioral psychologists know that motivation doesn’t breed success. Success breeds motivation. The more often you realize you are winning, the more motivation you will feel to keep winning. The key isn’t to force wins. It’s to open your eyes to the wins already around you that you’re probably overlooking.

Motivation comes between the bright spots.

Sharing something going well for you this week not only makes you remember and focus on the good things you have going for you, but it also gives the people who want to see you succeed a reason to smile and maybe even do the same in return.

Do you go to another gym or work for a company that doesn’t do BSF? Start it off by posting one and see who follows. That’s all I did.  Today, we’re a few thousand bright spots down the road and still sharing.

If nothing else, just know that on average adults smile less than 20 times per day. Some of us go whole days without smiling at all. That’s why we often feel happier around children – they smile more. On average, they do so 400 times a day. Whilst happy people still smile only 40-50 times a day.

Now, imagine half of your gym or business creating smiles for each other just by writing a sentence every Friday. How much better would Friday be? Are you smiling yet?
